A bath is immersing yourself into a container of water to cleanse and relax.
A sound bath is immersing yourself into a field of sound to relax and allow the body to heal itself on all levels: mind, body, spirit. It can be given by a sound healing practitioner or by yourself. You can do it individually or in a group.
Sound is energy vibrating at different frequencies. We, too, are energy, vibrating at different frequencies. We hear sounds and we feel the vibrations. Our bodies react and respond to vibrations, whether or not we can hear or feel them. Think of Ultrasound, which can be used to see into a woman’s womb and show us how the fetus is developing. Then think of the sound of an airplane flying overhead. We may or may not pay attention to the noise, but our body still reacts. We may cover our ears if it is really loud, or we may choose to tune it out.
Jonathan Goldman has coined the phrase: Sound plus intention equals healing. A sound bath can be offered with a specific healing intention. The sound amplifies the intention and as you relax with the sounds, your body is freed to do its natural work of bringing you back into harmony and balance. This works on an emotional level, too. You may take a hot bath after a stressful day at work. If you suffer from chronic stress, you may take a sound bath with an intention to release stress and tension. You may begin to feel more vitality and strength and start changing your life to reduce the causes of the stress.
